Some people spend their earthly lives leaving lasting footprints on the hearts of others through their kindness, influence, and friendship. Such a person was Sue Mahood.
Sue departed this earthly life on Friday morning, July 3, 2026, at the age of 94. She was a woman deeply loved by all who knew her. Her kindness, compassion, and gentle spirit touched countless lives, and her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those she loved. She will be greatly missed, forever cherished, and lovingly remembered.
Wanda Sue Busby was born on Friday, October 23, 1931, in Haskell, Texas, to the late R.D. Busby and Clara (Solomon) Busby. She was raised in Haskell, where she graduated from Haskell High School before continuing her education at North Texas Women's University in Denton, Texas.
On July 21, 1951, Miss Sue Busby was united in marriage to Mr. Robert H. Mahood. Together they built a loving home and were blessed with three daughters: Pam, Patricia, and Kathryn.
The Mahood family was founded on love, faith, and the joy of spending quality time together, both as a close-knit family and in the company of cherished friends. Sue found her greatest happiness in those she loved most, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren held an especially treasured place in their "Grans" heart. Her warmth, devotion, and unwavering love for her family created a legacy that will be remembered and cherished for generations.
Along with being a devoted wife and loving mother, Sue also enjoyed a fulfilling career outside the home. She worked for several banks and oil companies before finding her dream job as a Girl Scouts of America executive, a position she truly loved.
Sue was a dedicated advocate for the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and believed deeply in the value of education. She worked tirelessly to support local schools and was instrumental in the effort to establish Howard College in Big Spring, Texas.
When she wasn't working or volunteering in her community, Sue treasured spending time with family and friends while enjoying her two greatest passions, traveling and sports. She was an enthusiastic fan of the Dallas Cowboys, with the Texas Rangers as a close second. Her love of sports even led her to win a March Madness bracket by correctly picking every team. Throughout her life, Sue traveled extensively across the United States and abroad, creating cherished memories along the way. One of her most treasured experiences was celebrating her and Robert's 50th wedding anniversary by taking their entire family on a memorable cruise together. By faith, Sue was an integral part of the Baptist Church’s she attended especially the First Baptist Church in Odessa, Texas
Sue was preceded in death by her parents, R.D. and Clara Busby, her husband, Robert "Bob" Mahood, and a daughter, Kathryn McPherson.
She is lovingly survived by her surviving daughters Pam Austin (Dennis) of Abilene, Texas, Patricia Fogle of Plano, Texas; 5 grandchildren: Elizabeth Roberson (Brett), Bobby Austin (Mary), Benton Austin (Laura), Whitney Bendel (Chris), Nic Fogle (Traci); and 12 great grandchildren: Lola Roberson, Allie Roberson, Emma Austin, Lucy Austin, Reed Austin, Declan Austin, Landry Austin, Luke Bendel, Lawson Bendel Deacon Fogle, Peyton Fogle and Greyson Fogle; a host of other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends during visitation at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at the Conference Center of Pioneer Baptist Church in Abilene, Texas. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 11:00 a.m.
