Valton Charles Schmidt

May 10, 1926 — July 21, 2022

Valton Charles Schmidt, a longtime resident of Haskell and Jones Counties, passed away July 21 in Abilene.  He was born May 10, 1926 in Holland, Texas to Albert Schmidt and Agnes Teichelman Schmidt and moved with his family to the Sagerton area of southwest Haskell County in the early 1930’s.  After serving in combat in the US Navy, in the Pacific from 1943 until 1946, he returned to farming in Haskell County.

In December 1945 he married Beatrice Marugg and they had two children, Darla and Allen.  He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Alline Carlton and brothers Rufus Schmidt and Edgar “Bobby” Schmidt.  He is survived by Beatrice, his wife of 76 years, his two children, Darla Kepner and husband Rick of Crossville, TN and 1 son, Allen Schmidt and wife Carolyn of Sugar Land, TX,  five grandchildren, Kyle Kepner and wife Becky, Lacey Steinhauer and husband Jason, Ryan Schmidt and wife Melissa, Nathan Schmidt and wife Carol and Kevin Schmidt, and eight great grandchildren.  Funeral Services will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Sagerton on Tuesday, July 26 at 10:00 AM with Pastor Paul Cannon officiating.  Interment will be at Highland Memorial Cemetery in Stamford.  The family will be receiving friends at the Tankersley Funeral Home at 807 S. Columbia in Stamford on Monday evening from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m.  Condolences may be made and viewed at www.tankersleyfuneralhome.com .
