Rebecca Sue Morton

Sue Morton of Stamford, Texas passed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Thursday, January 5, 2023. She was 76 years old.

Rebecca Sue Thorn was born September 4, 1946, in Stamford, Texas. She was one of two daughters born to A.J. and Mary (Ferguson) Thorn. She attended school at Stamford before completing her education by obtaining a G.E.D.

Sue married Raymond Ray Smith in Haskell, Texas on August 19, 1961. To this marriage a daughter, Jenny Smith Garner, and a son John Smith were born. Raymond passed away on July 26, 1996.

Sue was a nurturing person from a young age, always there to help anyone she could. She dearly loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who knew her as “Mema”. Sue was blessed in that she once again found love and was united in marriage to Mr. Steve Morton on August 15, 2000, in Stamford, Texas. Steve and Sue enjoyed making several trips to Chama, New Mexico and riding the train through New Mexico and Colorado. In her younger years Sue was very much a tomboy out climbing trees and being rowdy, but she had a softer side that learned to crocheting and cook. Sue worked for several years as the supervisor of food service at the Stamford schools. In recent years Sue has been an avid twice a week gym goer, working out with the Silver Sneakers Class.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents, A.J. and Mary, and her husband, Raymond Ray Smith.

Memories of Sue will be cherished by her husband, Steve Morton of Stamford, Texas; her children, daughter, Jenny Garner, and son John Smith both of Abilene, Texas; sister and brother-in-law, Ruthie and James Byars of Clyde, Texas; sister-in-law, Charlotte Johnson of Haskell, Texas; her aunt and uncle, Rebecca and Ed Battaglia of Pittsburgh, PA; 5 grandchildren: Stevie and Krystal Garner, Jayse and Celicia Garner, Zachary Smith, Jayson Cam and Krystle Garner, Savannah and Ryan Tutt; 16 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

The family will gather for visitation at Tankersley Funeral Home (807 Columbia) Sunday, January 8, 2023, from 3 to 4 p.m. Funeral Services will be held Monday, January 9, 2023, at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Church with Dr. Robert Wingrove officiating. Burial will follow in New Hope Cemetery under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home.
