Vivian Inez “Peggy” Sweeney McClain was gently taken home during her sleep by her Lord and Savior on September 26, 2022, waking up in the beautiful gardens of heaven at the age of 96.
Peggy was the daughter of the late R. G. Sweeney and Myrna (Kieul) Sweeney. She was born on June 21, 1926, in Spur, TX, where she also graduated from high school in 1944.
Peggy was united in marriage to J.C. Powell at Spur, TX in 1944. To this marriage 8 children were born: Donna, twins James and Tommy, Sheila, Steve, Bill, Sandra, and Kenny. J.C. preceded her in death in 1986. In 1993 Peggy married J. A. McClain and relocated to Rotan, TX. In 1998 J.A. also preceded her in death. Peggy moved to Caldwell, TX in 2020 where she resided at the time of her death.
Peggy was a wife, “Ma” to her children, “Granny” to her grandchildren, and a homemaker by trade, and by faith she was a Baptist, devoted to serving God. She taught Sunday school, loved to read, and talk about the Bible. She was a lady who enjoyed crafting, whether she was quilting, sewing, or painting. Peggy also enjoyed the beauty of nature and working in her vegetable and flower gardens. She loved people and spending time with family and friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents, two husbands, son, Bill Powell, son Tommy Powell, and daughter, Sandra Cummings.
Peggy is lovingly survived by her children: daughter, Donna Dujuan Powell of Caldwell, TX, son and daughter-in-law, James and Donna Powell of Spur, TX, daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Johnny Randall of McKinney, TX, son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Melinda Powell of Eastland, TX, son and daughter-in-law, Kenny and Jenene Powell of Stamford, TX; 16 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren.
Peggy’s life will be celebrated at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 30, 2022, at the First Baptist Church in Stamford, TX with Rev. Dan Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home.
