Jerry Mack Hughes, loving father, Pawpaw, and faithful friend died peacefully on Saturday, September 11, 2021, at the age of 76. The family will gather at Tankersley Funeral Home (807 Columbia), Stamford, TX Thursday, September 16, 2021, from 6-7:00 p.m. for visitation. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 17, 2021, at Trinity Church with Dr. Robert Wingrove officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Creek Cemetery in Avoca, TX under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home.
Jerry was born on October 11, 1944, to W.C. and Ruby Lee Hughes in Stamford, TX. Jerry grew up in Avoca, TX, where he graduated from high school in 1964, he continued his education at Weatherford College in Weatherford, TX for a year on a baseball scholarship.
Jerry married Linda Leachman on June 15, 1979. Linda preceded him in death on June 24, 2014.
Jerry was lovingly known by all who knew him as “Squeaky”, and for his witty, dry sense of humor. As a young man Squeaky enjoyed riding bulls as a hobby. He was employed as a lineman for the electric company prior to an injury causing him to retire. Squeaky will also be remembered for the time he spent as the bartender at the Stamford Country Club. He was a member of Trinity Church in Stamford, TX.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, W.C. and Ruby Hughes, wife, Linda, brother and sister in law, Ray and Linda Hughes, sister-in-law, Carmen Hughes, niece, Kelly Porter, sister and brother-in-law, Ruth Ann and Bob Dickenson, brother-in-law, Ronny Cooper, and brother-in-law, Montie Neighbors.
Survivors include: his daughter and son-in-law, Mitzi and John Culpepper of Stamford, Texas; son, Dodey Hughes of Kemp, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, John and Rachel Hurst of Bedford, TX; brother, Billy Hughes of Abilene, TX; sister, Richie Neighbors of Abilene, TX; sister-in-law, Lynne Cooper of Canton, TX; nephew and niece-in-law, Charles and Judy Hughes of Abilene, Texas; 18 grandchildren, Justin, Hastings, Larissa Hastings, Payton Culpepper, Lyla Culpepper, Mason Hughes, Peyton Hughes, Tatum Hughes, Brittany Humphrey, Hayley Hurst, Jonathon Hurst, Kristopher Hurst, Jagger Hurst, Hannah Hurst, Elijah Hurst, Mathias Hurst, Roman, Hurst, Gideon Hurst and Sarah Hurst; 8 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Memorials may be sent in Jerry’s memory to the West Texas Rehab Center, 4601 Hartford St., Abilene, TX 79605.
