Glenn "Shorty" Baumbach

February 14, 1947 — October 5, 2024

Glenn “Shorty” D. Baumbach, 77, of Hawley, Texas passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, October 5, 2024.

Shorty was born in Stamford, Texas on February 14, 1947 to Otto R. and Esther (Mueller) Baumbach.  He attended Paint Creek High School, where he played football and was known for driving his motorcycle down the hall.  He proudly served as a Sergeant in the 196th Light Infantry Brigade in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.  He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor and two purple Hearts.  During retirement Shorty enjoyed riding horses and spending time with his family and dogs. He was a member of the Hawley Saddle Club and served on their board for many years.  He was also a lifelong member of the VFW.  Shorty would often be found sitting on his front porch watching the pecans grow and twiddling his thumbs. He was not only a military hero but was also a hero to all who knew and loved him. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and friend.

Survivors include his wife, Doris (Barbee) Baumbach of Hawley, children, Shonda Apple and husband Gary of Stamford, Darrell Heath Baumbach and wife Gail of Midland, Billy Keith Baumbach and wife Starr of Haskell, Jonathan Simcik and wife Misty of Cisco, Tricia Simcik of Stamford, Jennifer Carter and husband Peter of Fort Worth, 1 sister, JoAnn Davis and husband Louie Bob of Abilene, 14 grandchildren, great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother Billy Gene Baumbach and 1 grandson, Chancey Apple.

Graveside funeral services with military rites will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at the Highland Memorial Cemetery in Stamford under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to the Hospice of the Big Country or the Anson VFW.  May he rest in peace.
