Georgia Mae Casey was born September 26, 1930 to Aline Berry in Ellisville, TX. With her children by her side, Georgia Burkman, beloved mother, and grandmother peacefully passed away Monday, January 25, 2021, in Stamford, TX. She was a blessing to her family and friends for 90 years.
Georgia was reared by her grandfather and grandmother, Claudie and Maggie Casey. Georgia received her formal education through the school system in Morton Valley, TX. The Casey family lived in the small communities of Ellisville, Morton Valley and Cisco during Georgia’s formative years. At a young age she learned to love the Lord. Her grandfather was a traveling minister for many congregations taking her to many 3-day church camp meetings, bathing in a wash tub and drinking from tin cans.
On September 22, 1946, Georgia was united in marriage with Henry Burkman at Cisco, TX. They established their home in the Lueders community on a farm north of town. Georgia began her career as a farmer’s wife and homemaker helping her husband chop and pick cotton crops while raising their children.
She and Henry wanted their children to get an education. In the dry drought years after the youngest was in college, Georgia went to work cooking for Teakwood Nursing Home. Shortly after she studied and passed her G.E.D. and became a licensed dietician for Teakwood Manor. She continued to work in this capacity from 1975 until her retirement on February 10, 1995.
Georgia worked tirelessly for her kids’ school fundraisers, and as a class parent for sporting and livestock meets. She loved watching her children and grandchildren compete at livestock shows and sporting events. With her sweet smile on her face, she was always ready to cheer on her 7 grandkids and 17 great grandkids in their activities. Just to mention the “grands” to Grandma brought a glow to her face.
Georgia was a diligent worker and member of the Pink Ladies Organization for several years. She served the organization as president from 2001-2003.
Georgia was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church in Cisco, TX. For the last years she enjoyed pastors from the Bethel Lutheran Church of Avoca and Baptist Church in Lueders. During the COVID-19 quarantine she would listen to sermons for both churches each Sunday.
She was preceded in death by her mother, grandparents, her husband of 70 years, Henry Burkman on May 6, 2016, son Glenn Burkman on September 22, 2017, and sister Shirley Strawn.
Her life will forever be cherished in the lives of her children; son, Hank Burkman and wife Susan Cox; daughter-in-law, Annette Burkman; daughter Belinda Oman and husband John Bill; grandchildren, Jennifer Kelley (Tom), Jessica Detten (Dennis), Judith Grotegut (Christopher), Johnna Page (Sutton), Ingrid Tusa (Jacob), Taylor Burkman and Casey Martinez (Nick); 17 great grandchildren; sister, Margaret McDowell; brother, Cherry Berry; sister-in-law, Belva Yeager; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Georgia’s life will be celebrated at graveside services at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, January 31, 2021 at the Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery with Rev. Richard Strait officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home. Due to COVID-19, masks and social distancing are required.
