Doris Marie Clemmer Prewit was born November 1, 1929, in Callahan County, Texas. She was one of four children born to William Bert Clemmer and Ethel (Gooch) Clemmer. Doris met her Savior Wednesday morning September 5, 2018 inquiring about books and students in heaven, so she might continue her love for teaching.
Doris graduated in 1947 from Abilene High School and continued her education at Hardin Simmons completing her bachelor’s degree in education, earned her master’s degree and principal’s certificate. For Doris teaching was never a job, but a fulfilling joy, especially teaching children to read. During her 40-year career she taught in Abilene, Stamford, Avoca and Hamlin ISD’s.
Through mutual friends from Abilene and Hamlin Doris met her future husband Horace Lee Prewit better know as “H.L. or Grover”. Doris and Grover were married on September 26, 1953 at the First Baptist Church in Abilene. This union was blessed with a beautiful daughter, Michelle. The Prewit Family established their home in Stamford in 1956 where they resided until a few years ago when they relocated to Abilene.
Doris was active in numerous professional and civic organizations including Texas State Teachers Association, Texas Classroom Teachers Association, Pierian Club, Music Club, Garden Club, Preservation League, TCR Coffee hostess and was a Cowgirl for Hardin Simmons. Doris had a giving heart and enjoyed opening her home to host wedding and baby showers, even hosting a wedding once. Doris was a member of First Baptist Church in Stamford where she served on numerous committees including co-chairman of the 100 th year celebration. Above all Doris loved and cared for her family.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years Horace Lee Prewit, her parents, 2 sisters, Rosa Pearl Clemmer and Betsy Clemmer Ross.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Dan Cranor and granddaughter Kacee Cranor all of Abilene, TX; 1 brother Bill Clemmer and his wife Betty of Abilene, TX; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. Saturday, September 8, 2018 at the First Baptist Church (214 N. Swenson) in Stamford followed by 11 a.m. Funeral Services officiated by Rev. T.C. Melton. Burial will be following in Highland Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home.
