Darryl Glen Schoonmaker

Darryl Glen Schoonmaker passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2017 in Aspermont, Texas at the age of 77. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, September 16 th at 1:00 p.m. at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ericksdahl with Rev. Richard Strait officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home.

Darryl was born October 30, 1939 to John Berthal and Dorothy Strand Schoonmaker, at the Stamford Sanitarium. He attended school in Stamford, lettering in basketball and football, playing on Coach Gordon Wood’s State Championship teams in 1955 and 1956. He graduated from Stamford High School in 1957, attended Tarleton State College for 2 years, and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Tech University in 1962. After graduation, he began assisting his dad and uncle on the family farm east of Stamford. He served as the Member Services Director of Stamford Electric Co-op in the early 1970’s and then as General Manager of the Stamford Grain Co-op for several years. He served as the Chairman of the Sponsor’s Barrel Racing Contest of the Texas Cowboy Reunion for many years.

On June 23, 1962, he married Jayne Truett in San Antonio, Texas. To this union three children were born: Lori, Melanie and Greg. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Ericksdahl, Texas, where he served on the church council. Later in life he married Mickey Gibbs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J.B. and Dorothy Schoonmaker.

Darryl is survived by his wife Mickey of the home; his children, Lori Schoonmaker of Tulsa, OK, Melanie Shannon of Bristow, OK and Greg Schoonmaker (Cheryl) of Copper Canyon, TX; grandchildren, Christopher Schoonmaker, Hanna and Hope Schoonmaker, and Jackson Apple; brother, John “Haby” Schoonmaker (Jane); sisters, Linda Eastep (Guy) and Sharon Bolin (Buddy); numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tarleton State University Alumni Association (Memorial Fund), Box T-0260, Stephenville, TX 76402, which will be used for student scholarships.

The Schoonmaker Family will be hosting a Dove Hunt in Darryl’s memory, Saturday Morning, September 16 th . We will meet at the Tankersley Funeral Home (807 S. Columbia) parking lot, and will be leaving at 7:15 a.m. to go on the hunt. Everyone is welcome!
