Sprit Whittemore, Jr., 91, departed this life on Monday, August 1, 2022, at his home in Stamford, TX. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at Tankersley Funeral Home (807 Columbia) in Stamford, Texas. Funeral Services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Stamford on Thursday, August 4 th at 10 a.m. with Rev. Christopher Shupe officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery in Funston, Texas under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home.
Columbus Wright “Sprit” Whittemore, Jr. was born on January 28, 1931, to the union of Columbus W. Whittemore, Sr. and Sally (Johnston) Whittemore. Sprit was born in Rule, Texas where he was reared and completed his formal education at Rule High School in 1949.
On the 12 th day of May in 1951, Sprit married the love of his life, Miss Jane Davis. To this union four children were born: Kayla, Kyle, Kerry, and Kevin.
Sprit joined the Army on September 10, 1952, serving in Korea for 18 months before being dismissed on August 4, 1954. His working career included working for Brewer Neal in the construction business building homes, working as a pumper in the oil field and in 1961 he joined the work force at WTU where he worked until retirement in 1981. After retirement Sprit worked for Bailey Trucking Company in Rule, Texas. He also did electrical work in the area.
Sprit was preceded by in death by his parents, brother Thomas Whittemore, brother Doyle Whittemore, and son-in-law, Bob Brown.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife of 71 years, Jane Whittemore of the home; daughter, Kayla Brown of Stamford, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Kyle Davis and Linda Whittemore of Fort Worth, Texas; son, Kerry Wade Whittemore of Tuxedo, Texas; son and daughter-in-law Kevin Andrew and Denise Whittemore of Eloy, Arizona; sister-in-law, Marianna Whittemore of Odessa, Texas; 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.
