Norman Dean Shurley

August 7, 1939 — July 4, 2010

Norman Dean Shurley, 70, of Abilene, passed away on Sunday, July 4, 2010 in an Abilene hospital. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at the Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. David Cason officiating.  Committal services will be at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Bethel Lutheran Cemetery in Ericksdahl under the direction of Rev. Teresa Davis. The family will be receiving friends at the Tankersley Funeral Home in Stamford on Tuesday from 5 until 7 p.m. Norman was born August 7, 1939 in Stamford to Carl Alfred and Adeline Stenholm Shurley.  He was a lifetime resident of the area, graduating Lueders High School in 1958.  He married Opal Louise Brady on November 1, 1964 in Ericksdahl. Norman worked for the Safeway Store in Stamford and Abilene for many years and then for the Abilene I.S.D. for 17 years before his retirement. He served in the National Guard and was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Abilene. The family wishes to thank the staff and residents of Covenant Place of Abilene for making these last few months a special time in Norman’s life and also to the Hendrick Hospice for all of their special care. Survivors include 1 daughter, Tanya Patterson and husband Michael of Abilene, 1 son, Kenny Shurley of Abilene, 3 grandchildren, Davin, Ashten, and Tarissa all of Abilene, and 1 great grandchild, Adylyne, 1 brother and sister in law, Wayland and Connie Shurley of Stamford and 2 very special friends Dorothy Lundgren and Roger Hokanson whose phone calls and visits meant so much to Norman. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 41 years.
