Eunice (“Blondie”) Brownfield, age 91, died Monday, February 27, 2017, at Hospice Austin’s
Christopher House in Austin, Texas.
Eunice Evelyn Haterius was born to the late Addie E. (Tulien) and Rev. Dr. Hugo B. Haterius, a homemaker and pastor, respectively, on October 14, 1925. She was the third of four children, and grew up in the Ericksdahl community.
She attended Swenson School and Stamford High School. Upon graduation in 1942, she attended Texas Lutheran College in Seguin, Texas, for two years. She then completed her bachelor’s degree at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. After college, Blondie returned to Ericksdahl, where she met Charlie Brownfield. They married on November 30, 1946. They then moved to Austin for Charlie to attend law school, after which they returned to Stamford where she raised five children with faith, patience, discipline, and a lot of love.
Blondie was a lifelong member of Bethel Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School, was a member of W.E.L.C.A., served on the church board, and worked in numerous other capacities. If the doors at Bethel were open, she was most likely there.
Her home was always open – to kids and adults alike. Many a friend has spent a memorable afternoon or evening sitting around the kitchen or the pool having fun.
She was happiest when surrounded by her family, and often travelled to see both her children and her many grandchildren. As one trip ended, she was always looking forward to the next. In fact, her family often joked that she should have been a long-haul truck driver.
Her children would say she was hard headed, feisty, nurturing, and did not like messes, but most of all, she was loving...and she was loved.
She is preceded in death by her husband of nearly 70 years, Charlie, as well as her parents, brothers, Milton and Birger Haterius, and sister, Imogene Swenson. She is survived by her five children: Chuck (Anne Foster), M’liss (Pam McCollum), Lezli (Matt) Selmon, Renee (Richard) Strait, and Brooke (Scott) Anderson; 11 grandchildren – Lexi and Sanden (Kate) Averett; Zac (Jessica), Piper, Haley, and Spencer Selmon; Chaz (Mary Catherine) and Callan Brownfield; Ben, Brady, and Charlie Anderson; 2 great-grandchildren – Avery McBride and Rae Selmon; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 3, from 4 - 5:30 PM at Tankersley Funeral Home in Stamford, Texas. Rev. Richard Strait will officiate the funeral service on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at 2 PM at Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church.
