Jewell Bell Huffaker

Jewell Bell Huffaker, 94, of Del Rio, Texas and formerly of Stamford, passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at a Del Rio nursing home.  Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at the Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dennis Huffaker officiating.  Burial will follow in the Spring Creek Cemetery.  The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home on Monday from 6 until 7 p.m.

Jewell was born August 1, 1915 in Jones County to W. J. and Vera Jackson.  She was a lifetime resident of the area, attending school in Swan’s Chapel and graduating high school at Avoca.  She married Russell Huffaker July 27, 1934 in Anson, Texas. He preceded her in death in 1980. Jewell worked for J. C. Penny’s in Stamford for over 20 years as their bookkeeper and then at Anthony’s in Stamford.  She was a member of the Avoca Methodist Church where she was the secretary-treasurer for over 40 years, was active in all the women’s church groups, and taught Sunday school for many years. Jewell was also a member of the Stamford Garden Club.  She and Russell lived on the farm all their working lives and moved to Stamford in 1968 when Russell retired. She moved to Del Rio in 2001 to be near her children.  At the time of her death she was a member of the Del Rio 1st United Methodist Church.

Surviving Jewell are her daughter, Betty Fillmon and husband Bill of Del Rio, Texas, 1 grand son, Larry Fillmon and wife Terri of Haskell, Texas, 2 great grandchildren – Steven and Bailey Fillmon, both of Haskell, 1 sister, Willie Lollar of Edmund, Oklahoma and 3 nephews, Dale Lollar, James Lollar, and Jerry Lollar.
