Vernon Lovvorn, 91, passed way Saturday, August 22, 2009 at a local nursing home. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 24, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Stamford with Dr. Bruce Lampert, Revs. Jessie Morton and Jacob West officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery in Stamford under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home. The family will be receiving friends at the church parlor Monday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
Vernon was born August 6, 1918 in Jones County to Thomas Jefferson and Olivia Hubbard Lovvorn. He was a lifetime resident of the area, graduating from Stamford High School in 1936 and engaged in a career of farming and ranching in the Jones and Haskell Counties. On September 21, 1940 Vernon married Mary Louise Wedeking in Stamford. Mary preceded him in death on September 18, 1994, after 54 years or marriage. Vernon and Mary were members of the Corinth First Baptist Church where he was ordained as a deacon. In the late 1940’s they moved their membership to the Stamford First Baptist Church where Vernon was a member and a Deacon for over 60 years, and served as Sunday school superintendent for many years. He served as a trustee on the Stamford School Board. Vernon was a member of the Stamford All Stars and played in the 1949 World Series Softball Tournament in Greeley, Colorado.
Survivors include two sons; Thomas V. Lovvorn Jr., and wife Anna of Abilene, TX, James L. Lovvorn and wife LaVona of Seattle, Washington, one daughter; Mary Kathryn Cook and husband Wayne of DeSoto, TX. one sister; Nancy White and husband Lynn of Stamford, TX, one sister-in-law; Lou Jean Lovvorn of Stamford, five grandchildren; Shea M. Cook and wife Angie, Julia Cook Bilhartz and husband John, Lisa R. Lovvorn, Lauri M. Lovvorn, and Andrew J. Lovvorn, three great-grandchildren; Cormac R. Cook, Lucy Y. Cook and Isabella G. Bilhartz; a special friend, Louise Massey; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
His parents, his wife, two brothers; Douglas Lovvorn and infant brother Donald Frederick preceded him in death.
The family extends a special thank you to the staff of Stamford Community Care, Hospice of the Big Country and Oralia Lopez.
