Henry Burkman, 93, of Stamford and formally of Lueders passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, May 6, 2016. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 8, 2016 at Tankersley Funeral Home (807 S. Columbia) in Stamford, TX with the Rev. Teresa Davis and Elder Steve Clark officiating. Burial will follow at the Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery in Ericksdahl under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home Saturday evening from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Henry William Burkman was born October 31, 1922, to Walter Anton and Beaulah Caroline (Jamar) Burkman in Jones County, Texas. He was a 1941 graduate of Lueders High School, the largest class of the school’s history. Henry was a self-employed farmer, was employed by the Lueders Refinery for 8 years and later worked for the Ericksdahl Water Supply until his retirement in 1993. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his country from 1942 until 1946. On September 22, 1946 Henry married Georgia Mae Casey in Cisco, Texas. Henry and Georgia’s marriage of 69 years was blessed with three children, Glenn, Hank and Belinda.
The Burkman Family lived in the Lueders area until 1997, before moving to Stamford. During leisure time Henry enjoyed fishing, steer shows and a mean game of dominos. Henry was a member of Primitive Baptist Church of Cisco. He was active in his community serving on the Lueders School Board, Ericksdahl Cotton Gin Board, Lueders Mayor, Ericksdahl Water Board, delivered Meals on Wheels and Stamford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary “Pink Ladies”.
Henry is survived by the love and joy of his life; his wife, Georgia Burkman of Stamford, TX; 3 children, Glenn Burkman and wife Annette of Brownwood, TX, Hank Burkman of Denver, CO, Belinda Oman and husband John Bill of Avoca, TX; 7 grandchildren, Jennifer and Tom Kelley of Yoakum, TX, Jessica and Dennis Detten of Hereford, TX, Judith and Chris Grotegut of Hereford, TX, Johnna and Sutton Page of Avoca, TX, Ingrid and Jacob Tusa of Regan, TX, Taylor Burkman of Denver, CO, Casey and Nick Martinez of Denver, CO; Great Grandchildren, Emily June Kelley, Laurel and John Thomas Kelley, Jack, Rachael, Avery and Sam Detten, Johan and Josef Grotegut, Georgia and Charlie Tusa, Quincy Page, Alaya, Noah and Jordan Burkman, Lily and Colin Martinez, 1 sister Belva Yeager of Cisco, TX
Henry was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, F.W. Burkman and Cleo (Cherry) Burkman, brother-in-law Claude Yeager.
