Leah Jean Smith, of Odessa and formerly of Stamford, passed away on Monday, May 18, 2009 at an Odessa hospital. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel in Stamford with Rev. Jesse Morton officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethel Cemetery at Funston.

Jean was born August 14, 1926 in Anson, Texas to Lucian and Ethel McDuff. She was a lifetime resident of the area until moving to Odessa in 2004 to be near her daughter. Jean married Vernon Smith on Dec. 24, 1941 in Stamford. She was a homemaker and was a very active member of the 1st Baptist Church in Stamford.

She is survived by 2 sons, Jerry Smith and wife Mary Faye of Weatherford, TX, Gayle Smith and wife DeeAnn of Ponder, TX, and 1 daughter, Glenda Davisson and husband Fred of Odessa, TX, 1 brother Joe Ed McDuff and wife Patsy of Merkle, 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 54 years, Vernon Smith, 2 brothers, Harrell McDuff and T. C. “Speck” McDuff, 1 sister, Esther Purifoy, and 1 son, Michael Timothy Smith.
