Wilburn L. Jensen, 85, of Avoca, passed away on Saturday, May 16, 2009. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 18, 2009 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ericksdahl, with Pastor Teresa Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethel Lutheran Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends at Tankersley Funeral Home in Stamford on Sunday from 5 until 6 p.m.
Wilburn was born February 19, 1924 in Jones County to P. M. and Ruby Youngquist Jensen. He was a lifetime resident of the area. He married Artie Mae Miller December 1,1946 in Avoca. They were farmers all of their lives, farming land that was settled by his grandfather in 1906. Wilburn was a U. S. Army Air Corp veteran of W. W. II., serving in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the American Legion in the Lueders Chapter, a former board member of the Avoca Independent school district and then a member of the Lueders/Avoca independent school district, a founding board member of the Jones County Appraisal District, a board member of the Jones County Farm Bureau, a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Ericksdahl where he served in many capacities, including, Sunday School superintendent and the teenager Sunday school teacher for over 20 years, served 2 terms on the church council and was the sexton of the cemetery until his retirement just this past year.
He was preceded in death by his parents, P. M. and Ruby Youngquist Jensen, his wife of 46 years, Artie Mae Jensen and 1 brother A. C. “Pete” Jensen.
He is survived by 3 sons, Martin Jensen of Abilene, Milton Jensen of Avoca, John Jensen and wife Becky of Lueders, 1 daughter, Dr. Annette Jensen of Midland, 3 grandsons, Tony Jensen and wife Tommi, John Carl Jensen, Randy Jensen, 2 great grandchildren, Jay Jensen and Logan Jensen all of Avoca.
