Gene Leon Wells, 85, of Paint Creek, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009 in Rochester. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday at the Haskell Church of Christ with Rev. Jacob West officiating. Interment will follow in the Howard Cemetery in Haskell county under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home.
Gene was born June 1, 1923 in Haskell county on the family farm to the late W. F. and Ola Windsor Wells. He was a lifetime resident of the Paint Creek area and graduated high school in Paint Creek in 1942. Gene served in W. W. II in the Philippines and Luzon and took part in the occupation of Japan. Gene was a member of the American Legion Post 221 in Haskell and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9179 in Stamford. Gene was a Staff Sergeant in the 11th Airborne Division. Gene was a farmer and a member of the Haskell Church of Christ.
Gene is survived by his son, Charlie Wells of Haskell, 1 brother, Wayne Wells of Haskell, 1 sister, Christine Bruton of Haskell, special friends, David and Diana Simmons of Haskell, Steve Simmons of Peacock, and Crystal Trotter of Haskell, 3 nieces, 2 nephews, 2 great nephews and 1 great niece.
Gene was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Layne Wells and Windsor Wells, and 1 sister, Oleta Bailey.
