Louise Plumlee Massey, also known as “Grandma” and “Plain Grandma”, passed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, taking with her the wit, compassion and ethics of hard work. She has just turned 92 years old.
Mary Louise Lawson was born March 6, 1923, in Stamford, Texas; she was the oldest of four children and daughter of Joel Ethridge and Effie Marie (Thomason) Lawson. She graduated from Stamford High School in 1940.
Louise loved her occupation as “homemaker”, being the epitome of one, from her spotless home, cooking and baking skills to her manicured yard and even keeping the neighborhood alley mowed. She was a true southern lady who was always beautifully dressed with a kind word and a smile to share. Louise worked for Southwestern Bell as a switch board operator and wire chief clerk retiring after 33 years of service.
Louise was active in the civic life of Stamford. She was a member of the Stamford Garden Club, an Honorary Life Member of The Pierian Club serving in numerous capacities in the local club and Mesquite District level, Telephone Pioneers and a member of the First Baptist Church. She was selected as the Woman of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce twice, in 1993 and in 1999. Louise was honored by Southwestern Bell for her service as a telephone operator for saving a man’s life by keeping him on the phone until emergency assistance could arrive.
Roy Plumlee and Louise Lawson married on July 26, 1941 in Stamford. They were blessed with two children; Jocille and Alan. Roy preceded Louise in death on June 29, 1966. She married Marvin Massey on June 22, 1974. Marvin also preceded her in death on April 19, 1988.
Louise leaves to cherish her memories, one daughter, Jocille Ender and husband Donald; and one son Alan Plumlee and wife Terri all of Stamford; a step daughter, Pat Gray of Stamford, 5 grandchildren, Bart Rosenquist and wife Mary of Wall, Darron Rosenquist and wife Audrey of Abilene, Devery Rosenquist and wife Shana of Abilene, Eric Plumlee and wife Larissa of Cortland, NY and Chad Plumlee of Stephenville; 17 step grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 9 step great grandchildren and 9 great great-grandchildren.
Preceding Louise in death were her parents, two husbands, two brothers, Bill Lawson and Charlie Lawson, one infant sister, Bella Jo Lawson, one step son, Tommy Massey and one great grandson.
The family will receive visitors at Tankersley Funeral Home (807 S. Columbia), Thursday, April 2, 2015 from 6-8 p.m. Louise’s family and friends will gather in her honor for services on Friday, April 3, 2015 at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Jacob West and Bro. Joe Walton officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home.
