Mary Bell Glendenning Medlin was born at her parents' home in Hutto, TX on December 19,
1912. She was the daughter of William and Jean Ann Martin Glendenning. Her parents were both born in Scotland and immigrated to the Texas community as children. Mary graduated from Hutto High School and later came to Stamford, TX to study nursing at the Stamford Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. On February 10, 1935, she married Weaver Medlin.
They lived in the Stamford community for most of their married life. After their retirement, they also lived for a short time in Abilene, Georgetown, Sweetwater, and Marble Falls TX.
Mary was a homemaker, an accomplished seamstress, and artist. She was a member of First Baptist Church and later a member of the First Presbyterian Church. As a child, she attended the Presbyterian Church in Hutto. She was a member of the Stamford Hospital Auxiliary and served as their president. When her husband was hospitalized for several months, she managed his tire store, Weaver Medlin Tire Co. She worked at Webb’s Department Store in the late 1950s.
In 1993, Mary and Weaver moved to Topeka, Kansas, to be near their daughter Elsie Medlin Lesser. Weaver died at 94 on July 16, 2003. Mary was a resident of Presbyterian Manor at her death. In her 90s, she renewed her interest in painting. She was a student of Robert Ault. In
2009 she was recognized by the Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America for her art work and her painting, "My Mailbox". It was selected for reproduction on note cards and calendars to sell for the support of the Good Samaritan Fund at Presbyterian Manors.
Mary also continued her interest in sewing. She made a quilt for her great grand daughter, Alexandra, when she was 96. She continued to mend and do alterations for family, friends and residents of her retirement home.
She was also preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Glyn Medlin Parnell in 2007; her brothers, William, Hugh and Edward Glendenning a sister, Elizabeth Glendenning Markham; and a son in law, Darryl Lesser in 2013. She is survived by her daughter, Elsie Lesser; son-in-law Ben Parnell of Abilene, TX; grandchildren, Benny Parnell of Bossier LA, Michael Lesser of Topeka, KS; and Tiffany Lesser Swinehart of KS City, MO. She has six great grandchildren, Joseph of Dallas, TX; Ashley, Dylan and Parker of Topeka, KS; and Alexandra Elsiemarie of KS City, MO and two nephews, Dr. Glenn Markham of Abilene, TX and John Markham of Austin, TX. Mary had many dear friends but two friends she loved and cherished a life time and who preceded her in death were Evelyn Carrington, a childhood friend from Hutto, and Irene Mills of Stamford.
Funeral services for Mary will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 1, 2014 at the Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel at 807 S. Columbia – Stamford, Texas . Mary will be laid to rest beside her husband after the services at the Highland Memorial Cemetery in Stamford.
