Wayland Shurley

Alfred Wayland Shurley was born on February 10, 1942 to Alfred and Adeline (Stenholm) Shurley. He passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2014 at the age of 72.
The family will receive visitors from 6-7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2nd at Tankersley Funeral Home (807 S. Columbia) Stamford, TX. Wayland’s loved ones will gather in his honor for funeral services at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at Bethel Lutheran Church 10625 FM Rd 600 N.(Ericksdahl Community) Avoca, TX with the Rev. Teresa Davis officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethel Lutheran Cemetery under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home.
Wayland graduated from Stamford High School in 1960. He was a member of the 1959 State Championship Football Team. Wayland continued his education at Texas Lutheran College for one year and graduated from Texas Tech in 1964. Wayland retired from USDA as State Executive Director of Texas Farm Service Agency.
Wayland married the love of his life, Connie Rose (Ivy) Shurley on June 15, 1962 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Ericksdahl. Wayland and Connie were both lifetime members of Bethel Lutheran Church where they have served in many capacities.
Wayland touched everyone he knew and never turned down helping someone. He was truly a gentleman and will be remembered as being humble and kind. He was a godly man who lived by his faith. Wayland was a smart and talented man that loved wood working, pointing arrowheads, growing a garden and keeping a manicured yard. He was an avid sports fan who loved fishing, camping, golfing and cheering on his beloved Stamford Bulldogs.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Norman; his daughter Debra; and his son Wade.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years Connie Shurley of Stamford, Texas; and a host of other relatives and friends.
