Nancy Russell Obituary
Nancy Ruth Harrison Russell was born on October 28, 1924 to W.B. “Dub” Sr. and Leanora Harrison. She passed from this earth on March 24, 2014 at the age of 89. Stamford born and raised, Nancy graduated from Stamford High School in 1941 and moved to Austin, where she attended the University of Texas, studying interior design. She married her beloved husband on December 9, 1944, and they settled in Stamford after the war. They celebrated 69 years of marriage this past December.
Nancy was a true lady who was a master at knitting, crochet, sewing and quilting, and even owned her own knitting shop, “The Knitting Nook” in Stamford for a while. She taught many of the residents of Stamford how to knit and crochet. Nancy also enjoyed gardening, keeping her own flower garden, numerous house plants, and tended the flowers at the church for years. Nancy was an accomplished bridge player, and she kept her mind sharp with daily crossword and sudoku puzzles. When they opened the Stamford Insurance Agency, Nancy got her insurance license and worked at the agency until her retirement in 1985.
Nancy took up golf in her retirement, and she and Norris traveled the country playing golf. They took many trips to see the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, to whom she was known as “Nan Nan.” She was also involved in her beloved church, Central Presbyterian Church in Stamford, where she served in numerous capacities over the years.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, W.B. and Leanora Harrison, sister Bobbie Nell, and her husband, Norris. She is survived by her brother, Bland Harrison of Stamford, daughter Robbie Russell of Abilene, son Dr. Norris Russell of Shawnee, OK, grandson Jeremy Russell (Sally) of Moore, OK, granddaughter Meredith Hines (Jeremy) of Shawnee, OK, and four great-grandchildren, Ainslee, Gracie, Samuel, and Simon Russell, as well as countless relatives and friends.
The family will receive visitors from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26 at Tankersley Funeral Home. Nancy’s loved ones will gather in her honor for funeral services at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Central Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kelly Pigott officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to the Central Presbyterian Church, 601 Rowland St., Stamford, Texas 79553.
