Norris Meredith Russell Sr.

Norris Meredith Russell, Sr. was born on November 22, 1919 in Aspermont, TX to Earl Aubrey (E.A.) and Ora Odessa Russell, the middle child of three. He departed this world on February 13, 2014 at the age of 94. The railroad took the young family from Aspermont to Spur, TX for a time, and then finally to Stamford, TX. Norris graduated from Stamford High School in 1937. He attended Millsaps College and the University of Texas before enlisting in the Army Air Corps and serving in World War II as an A20 pilot, a member of the 409th Bomb Group. He married his beautiful wife, Nancy Ruth (Harrison), on December 9, 1944. They celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary this past December. They settled in Stamford, TX. Norris farmed, worked various sales jobs, and finally founded the Stamford Insurance Agency with Nancy, which they operated until their retirement in 1985. He was a long time, loyal member of the Central Presbyterian Church in Stamford. His retirement years were filled with lots of travel, golf trips, time with family, and being “Paw Paw” to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Norris was preceded in death by his parents, E.A. and Ora Russell, brother Earl and sister Billie Marie. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Russell of Stamford, TX, one daughter Robbie Russell of Abilene, TX, one son Dr. Norris (Russ) Russell of Shawnee, OK, granddaughter Meredith Hines (Jeremy) of Shawnee, OK, grandson Jeremy Russell (Sally), and four great grandchildren, Ainslee, Gracie, Samuel and Simon Russell of Moore, OK.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the Central Presbyterian Church, 601 Rowland St., Stamford, Texas. Interment will follow at the Highland Memorial Cemetery in Stamford under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home on Monday from 5 until 7 p.m.
