L.H. Simpson, 87, passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at his home in Stamford. A graveside service will be held at Rockdale Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 25th with Rev. Jerry Vincent officiating and under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home of Stamford.
L.H. was born on April 17, 1926 in Anson to Hardin and Golda Kile Simpson. His family moved to Stamford when he was a child and was a life-time resident. He married Blanch “Peaches” Raughton on November 23, 1943. L.H. and Blanch would celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary this November.
At the age of 18, L.H. was called to battle in World War II and served 13 months in combat under the command of General George C. Patton. Following his Honorable Discharge, L.H. returned to Stamford where he drove a truck for several years then later owned and operated grain elevators in surrounding communities. In 1960, they opened Simpson Steel Yard which remained in operation over 40 years.
L.H. is survived by his wife, Blanch; son, Danny Simpson, of Hawley, grandsons, Lane Simpson of Arkansas and Scott Simpson of Australia, sister, Geraldine Denson and husband Guy of Stamford, brother- in-law James M. Raughton and wife Jeanie of Paint Creek and brother-in-law Rudy Raughton and wife Cindy of Roscoe.
Pallbearers will be nephews Randy Denson, Ronnie Denson, Craig Raughton, Jim Raughton, Trevor Sutton, and Nelson Coulter.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Leon Joplin, Caregiver Cindy Acosta, and the staff of Hospice of the Big Country for the time and attention given to L.H. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Rockdale Cemetery, 1213 E. Wells, Stamford, TX 79553 or Hospice of the Big Country, 4601 Hartford St, Abilene, TX 79605.
