Earl Edwin Smith, 87, of Stamford, passed away on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 in Stamford. Cremation services have been selected and a graveside memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 7, 2012 at the Hamlin East Cemetery with Rev. Jacob West officiating and under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home of Stamford.
Earl was born April 11, 1924 in Jones County to George W. and Lee Thompson Smith. He was raised in the Hamlin area and graduated from Hamlin High School in 1942. Earl went into the United States Army Air Corp in 1942 and served until 1945. Earl began his banking career at the Hamlin National Bank, where he worked until 1960. He moved to Stamford and worked for over 30 years in every capacity at First National Bank retiring as President in 1990. He married Craigolene Elmore on December 24, 1942 in Hamlin. She preceded him in death in 1979. In 1980 Earl married Bobbie Frazier. While in the service, Earl earned the good conduct Medal, an E T O ribbon and three battle stars and was a Prisoner of War from June of 1944 until May of 1945. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Ex-Prisoners of War, a member of the First Baptist Church in Stamford and served on the board of directors for the Stamford Memorial Hospital from November of 1974 until February 1981.
Family members left to cherish his memories are his wife, Bobbie Smith of Stamford, 1 son, George Smith and wife Judith of Fort Worth, 1 daughter, Mary Cisek and husband Danny of Carmel, Indiana, 1 step daughter, Becky Hamrick and husband Steve of The Woodlands, 2 step sons, Greg Frazier and wife Joani of Fort Worth and Joe Frazier and wife Sharon of Santa Barbara, CA, 3 grandchildren, Taylor Smith and wife Kelly, Robert Johnson and wife Wilson, and David Johnson and wife Amy, 6 step grandchildren, Lucy Frazier, Cortney Frazier, Brian Frazier and wife Colette, Ben Frazier and wife Alice, Kristin Haterius and husband Sven, and Leta Deitloff and husband Tim , 3 great grandchildren, Alex Johnson, Phoebe Johnson, and Abby Johnson, and 6 step great grandchildren, Emerson Frazier, Tyler Deitloff, Avery Deitloff, Corbin Frazier, Haddon Frazier, and Kai Frazier.
