He was a member of the Church of Christ in Throckmorton. George was raised and worked on the R.A. Brown Ranch in Throckmorton, where his Dad was a long time employee. From a young age, George loved the outdoors and a good quarter horse. He served as the R.A. Brown ranch foreman from 1966 to 2000. His passion for quarter horses allowed him the opportunity to study under Buster Welch at one of his cutting horse schools. In 1969-1970 he showed in the West Central Texas Cutting Horse Association, winning the novice horse of the year award both years. Horses that George broke and trained earned him several awards at Red Stegall’s Cowboy Gathering and Ranch Rodeo and the Fort Worth Ranch Horse Competition. He also won the Working Cowboy Award at the Stamford Cowboy Reunion in 2001. The Brown Ranch participated in the Texas Ranch Roundup every year and in that time, George helped win the Top Ranch title three times and was on the team that won the team penning four times. He made quite a name for himself serving as the head cook at the campfire for 10 years. Even as a semi-retired cowboy, George still took care of the old headquarters south of Throckmorton. Thirty three years ago George met his soul mate, and partner for life, his wife, Josie Smith Self.
