Maxine Rowland Selmon

Maxine Rowland Selmon, 95, of Stamford passed away on Sunday, June 19, 2011 in Stamford. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Central Presbyterian Church in Stamford with Rev. Trey Little officiating. Burial will follow at the Highland Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home.
Maxine was born July 15, 1915 in Abilene, Texas to Richard Kiefer and Sara Mae Graves Rowland. The family moved to Stamford when Maxine was just a child. She graduated Stamford High School in 1932 and then attended Trinity University in Waxahachie, TX, graduating in 1936 with a degree in Public School Music. She moved to Albany and taught music for three years and then moved back to Stamford, where she continued her teaching career for four more years. Maxine married Tony Selmon on June 11, 1943 in Albany, TX.
Maxine had many passions including literature, writing poetry, and painting, especially with water colors. She directed high school and community plays for many years, many of which she wrote. One of her favorites, A Fiddle and a Silver Dollar, was based on a story told to her by her father-in-law, John Selmon. A lifelong member of the Central Presbyterian Church, she directed the children’s Christmas play for 50 years, and directed the choir for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Stamford Music Club, where she was recognized as a Texas composer.
Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Dr. Tony Selmon of Stamford, one daughter, Dr. Sara Tee Campion and husband David of Highbridge, Wisconsin, two sons, John Richard Selmon and wife Pricilla of Redondo Beach, CA, and Dr. Matthew Rowland Selmon and wife Lezli of Austin, TX, six grandchildren, Zachary Benjamin Selmon, Sara Piper Selmon, Haley Catherine Selmon, Matthew Spencer Selmon, Kimberly Bernice Selmon, and Richard Keifer Selmon.
